Crassula arborescens undulatifolia, commonly known as Ripple Jade is of course, one of the predominant landscape plant needs is a domesticated, just-the-right-size, medium to low shrub. In the past, Pittosporum, (especially Wheeler’s Dwarf) and Raphiolepsis filled this need, but they are not sufficiently drought tolerant. As they age, they get woody. In fact, rats love to gnaw on the stems and branches of some of these! Probably one of the number one, new generation shrubs for our thirsty gardens, will be ‘Ripple Jade!’ It is very drought tolerant when established, the perfect size (3’-3’ round), takes sun or part shade, develops no woody stems, is easily pruned and shaped, and rats and rabbits don’t like them. It is cold hardy down to the low 20’s, and the leaves are all twisty and cool! You just want to reach in and scruff them like on a kid’s head.
