Euphorbia rigida, commonly known as Gopher Spurge has two unpleasant names for a really beautiful plant! Forms a medium height clump to 2′ tall, and up to 3′ wide, of tightly arranged whorls of blue-grey leaves on stems that arch upward from the base. For an added treat, in late winter and early spring, the ends of the stems explode in large, showy clusters of chartreuse flowers. Extremely water-wise when established. For nice, neat appearance, cut off old spent stems that have finished flowering, at the base. Hardy to sub-zero. Full sun. It’s true! Gophers won’t eat it! Myth Buster: It won’t keep gophers out of your garden. As with all plants in the Euphorbia family, the milky sap is irritating to the skin, and painful in the eyes. Handle with care, and wear gloves.
