Common Name: Cane Cholla
Opuntia spinosior, commonly known as Cane Cholla. What a desert beauty! We have found this to be one of the best and longest season flowerers of the Opuntia family, with 1.5” brilliant, hot carmen pink flowers from early spring well into summer and even late summer. Its form is tree-like, up to 6′ tall and branching nicely. Spines are sharp, but not overly abundant or large, and are firmly retained by the plant, so the dangers of loose spines and easily detached stem parts are less of a factor with this variety than with most chollas. Extra summer waterings and additional fertilizer will maximize the extent of the flowering season and keep the cholla stems a nice healthy green. Hardy to mid teens; full sun.
