Common Name: Elephant Mat
Portulacaria afra minima, commonly known as Elephant Mat, has tiny little leaves, not even the diameter of dark green peas strung on ruby red stems like a necklace, cascade downward from edges of pots and over crags and corners of rocks. Occasionally bursts pink flowers especially when stressed. This is a permanent, flat-growing (or hanging) little succulent shrub- not to be confused with the growth habit of ice-plants and such. Beautiful on edges of potted plant groupings, in nooks and crannies of rock gardens, and even as a great house-plant in a sunny window. 4-6 inches high, spreading to 4 feet wide; tender to frost. Full sun, coastal, as well as part shade anywhere except indoors.
