Portulacaria macrophylla "Bull-ephant”
Portulacaria macrophylla gigantea
“Bull-ephant” Bush
This is the “biggest boy” yet of the Elephant’s Food plants from South Africa. Growing large, and quickly up to 6’ (or more) all around, it has its own unique growth habit and form compared to its other Portulacaria relatives. With its arching and cascading branches, for those familiar with the widely popular group of landscape plants called “Natal Plums” (Carrisa), this plant’s form, coloration and habit looks VERY similar... but WITHOUT THE THORNS! This is a strong, durable landscape, and even slope plant that- once established can tolerate a good deal of dryness. Dark magenta stems accent large, rounded, rich green leaves. Fire-proof plant. Tender to freeze, but mature plants can absorb milder frosts. Full sun, to light shade. Regular garden watering to quite dry- it all works.
