Seasons

Jackie Jesch • July 16, 2021

A few months ago in the early spring, I noticed a chorus of chirps and peeps out the north side of our home. That’s where we have a shaded patio the length of the house. When I looked out the windows that travel from one end to the other, room to room the delightful activities of the birds announced spring with the gathering and building of nests along the beams. At first, I felt such joy! We watched and delighted in these sounds of life.

Soon, I found myself going out to sweep the clutter off the porch…not once, but twice a day. My delight seemed to be tarnishing…. As time marched on, I began to find it a bit of a burden even with the fluffs and chatter of the birdies. After a while, I tried hosing off the miscellaneous twigs, fuzz, and bits of flotsam that had been gleaned to construct these bird nests, when I noticed their beauty, and intricacy. I was in awe! Not only was I observing the construction of their nests, hearing their song of life, watching their loving care for each other, but the natural and precious creation in nature right out my back door. With a new attitude I simple hosed off the mess with grace and humbleness and a touch of reverence for the creator.

Jumping ahead to the present, I find that the days of summer are longer, warmer, and now demanding that I prune off dead blooms, and overhanging, invasive Blackberry stems, and water the garden more. The mornings and evenings are cool and lovely, and as I peeked out the window just yesterday, I saw several birdies in my front garden, jumping from stem to stem, seeming to find treasures to eat off my golden Rudbeckias blooming wildly in my front garden. It brought my thoughts back to springtime and their cycle of nesting and life. It put a smile on my face and I had to call my husband to come and see.

So, as I am writing this little article about the birds and springtime, I am reminded of that old song “Turn, Turn, Turn”. That dates me some, but it comes from a wonderful time in my life and its words are born from infinite wisdom in the scriptures.

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:

I just had to listen to the BYRDS on You Tube singing “Turn, Turn, Turn” as I finished this article for you. I invite you to join me.

Till Next Time,

Jackie Jesch

Did you know compost can reach temperatures up to 160 degrees? That’s right! In this video, Tom Jesch from Waterwise Botanicals shares some fascinating science behind why compost gets so hot. It’s all thanks to the millions of micro-organisms hard at work! These living organisms feed on nutrients—like nitrogen—and act like tiny engines, generating heat as they break everything down. It’s very similar to how our own bodies work: we eat nutritious food that feeds our billions of cells, which then produce body heat around 98.6 degrees. We love sharing these fun, science-based insights and our passion for the natural world with you. Watch the full YouTube video here! From the time I was a little girl, helping my mom plant sweet peas, to being in the nursery business for almost twenty years…I’ve loved gardening. Some of my best days were spent whiling away my time in the garden, visiting nurseries, browsing through endless garden books and magazines, and garden design ideas at Waterwise Botanicals plant nursery.

Working in this industry has taught me well, but what I love most is the creativity that goes along with it. Designing a beautiful landscape, or meeting such wonderful people who share their enthusiasm & ideas for gardening. I never tire of discovering new plants, or changing up the mood of my garden.

I have a passion for photography and writing, so you will usually find me with my camera trying to capture a shot of a beautiful plant or design. My articles are written to inspire, encourage, and share some pearls of wisdom I’ve gathered through the years, as well as highlight other authors, plants and concepts that are trending in design. So, let’s take a journey together “IN THE GARDEN”.

The three main ingredients in fertilizer are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K)—often referred to as NPK. These essential macronutrients each play a key role in plant growth: nitrogen promotes lush leaf growth, phosphorus supports strong root development, and potassium enhances overall plant health and resilience.
