The Music of Color in the Garden

Jackie Jesch • Feb 13, 2024

No matter what style or design you have chosen for your garden, adding color is like adding music. It catches the eye of the beholder and the spirit of the creator. You may want to create a “quiet” garden of muted colors among the shades of green…or one that “sings” with color. Color is like a magic wand that lifts the spirit. Oddly, it can be done with only one color, or it can be a kaleidoscope of many colors. Only you can be the artist.

The fun in designing or maintaining a garden is like reaching down in your heart and discovering what brings you joy! I know when I walk through nurseries for the sheer joy of discovery, I feel excited when I see something that touches my senses...an idea using structure, design, or just using a group of plants to create “joy” when I see it.

I like all kinds of music and I enjoy a beautiful garden, so when something is out of place in your garden, it’s kind of like hearing a crashing symbol when you need a guitar or violin. Along that same train of thought…We all need a symbol placed in just the right spot for drama, as much as the band does. Only in the garden, it might be a grouping of red Roses or some blooming Aloes…or an arbor with a pink vine cascading over the top.

So have some fun and as you sit in your garden, ask yourself if you can “hear the music”. Is it out of tune? …maybe it needs an adjustment? You are the conductor, so you can create beautiful music as you garden…and you can add something here and remove something there to make it your beautiful concert.

Till next time,

Jackie Jesch

From the time I was a little girl, helping my mom plant sweet peas, to being in the nursery business for almost twenty years…I’ve loved gardening. Some of my best days were spent whiling away my time in the garden, visiting nurseries, browsing through endless garden books and magazines, and garden design ideas at Waterwise Botanicals plant nursery.

Working in this industry has taught me well, but what I love most is the creativity that goes along with it. Designing a beautiful landscape, or meeting such wonderful people who share their enthusiasm & ideas for gardening. I never tire of discovering new plants, or changing up the mood of my garden.

I have a passion for photography and writing, so you will usually find me with my camera trying to capture a shot of a beautiful plant or design. My articles are written to inspire, encourage, and share some pearls of wisdom I’ve gathered through the years, as well as highlight other authors, plants and concepts that are trending in design. So, let’s take a journey together “IN THE GARDEN”.

Listen to Tom Jesch share about his "baby"- Aeonium Merlot! Aeonium Merlot is a crossbreed between Aeonium 'Zwartkop'-the royal pinwheel, and Aeonium urbicum- the Salad Bowl plant. The properties of these plants lend to this plant. Aeonium urbicum keeps all of its leaves all through summertime. Aeonium 'Zwartkop with its dark burgundy leaves lends to this species. What's beautiful about this Aeonium? No other Aeonium grows into such a beautiful mound such as the Aeonium Merlot for a landscaping succulent. You get the best of both worlds with Aeonium Merlot!
